ACTION ALERT: Time For A Green New Deal

In this time of global economic crisis, Canadians from all walks of life are worried about their jobs, their homes, and their futures. In a time of protracted climate crisis, we are also worried about the future of our planet.  In its upcoming budget, the Canadian Government has the opportunity to launch a hopeful response to these crises by making a “Green New Deal” for Canada.

TAKE ACTION:

KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives and the Council of Canadians urge you to contact Minister Flaherty, Prime Minister Harper and the Opposition leaders about investing in a hopeful future for Canadians and the world we live in.  Rather than continuing to subsidize the oil industry, which has the end result of increasing greenhouse gas emissions, the Canadian government needs to invest in jobs and infrastructure that will ensure sustainability.

Minister Flaherty, In this time of global economic crisis, Canadians from all walks of life are worried about their jobs, their homes, and their futures. In a time of protracted climate crisis, we are also worried about the future of our planet. The Canadian Government has the opportunity to launch a hopeful response to these crises by making a "Green New Deal" for Canada. This includes: • Ending subsidies to the oil industry. The domestic oil and gas industries now receive approximately $1.4 billion a year in subsidies. Internationally, Canada contributes to $1 billion in World Bank subsidies to the oil industry. • Investing in energy conservation and efficiency (such as building retrofit programs and improvements in electricity transmission), renewable energy production, and expansion of public transit. Not only will this reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but it will also provide new opportunities for quality jobs. • Working with provinces, territories, municipalities and First Nations, to invest in public regional grids for renewable power, integrated across provincial borders. Such a project would provide jobs in research, design, construction, and maintenance, in addition to meeting the Minister Flaherty's expressed desire for "nation building" infrastructure projects, and go a long way towards ensuring energy security for Canada. I urge Minister Flaherty to seize the opportunity to put our country on a path that is good for the economy, the environment, and all Canadians. Sincerely
