This morning, numerous health organizations across Ontario called on the provincial government to ban medical tourism. Medical tourism is the practice where health-care institutions create for-profit programs to attract patients from other countries to come to Canada for health care on a pay-for-treatment basis.

Environmental Defence and Greenpeace have released a new report which shows that TransCanada has been “vastly exaggerating Energy East’s ability to reduce overseas oil imports” in a “desperate attempt to justify its Energy East pipeline and tanker proposal.”

TransCanada has claimed that Eastern Canadian refineries import 86% of their crude oil from sources such as Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela, and Algeria.  The refineries served by Energy East actually receive only 14.1% of their supply from those sources. Among foreign sources, the United States is the biggest supplier. Energy East would not supply Eastern Canadian refineries with tar sands oil, but would export up to 1 million barrels of unrefined oil every day.

LNG Quebec

The Council of Canadians is opposing the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipelines and export terminals in British Columbia, we have highlighted that the New Brunswick government wants to twin the Energy East tar sands pipeline with a gas pipeline to bolster an LNG export terminal in Saint John, and have noted a proposed LNG export terminal in Guysborough, Nova Scotia.

Now the LNG industry appears to be eyeing Quebec.

Right to Water

On October 11, as many as 100,000 people marched in Dublin, Ireland against austerity and water charges. An even larger protest is expected across the country on November 1. The Irish Examiner reports, "A mass wave of water protests will be staged across the country this weekend as public anger over the controversial charges continues. ...Tens of thousands of protesters will take to the streets on Saturday at more than 50 rallies in cities, towns, and villages in what organisers hope will be the biggest mass mobilisation against the levy."

The Council of Canadians is concerned by the increasing pattern of surveillance under the Harper government of social movement groups, including our own organization.

In June, we denounced the Harper government's order to federal departments to monitor all political demonstrations across the country. The Government Operations Centre is ‘compiling a list of all known demonstrations’ that has included protests against fracking, a healing dance, a prayer ceremony and a fundraiser. More on this at Government Operations Centre to monitor all protests.
