Federal NDP proposes motion to disclose SPP working group activity to Parliament

On February 12, NDP Trade Critic Peter Julian tabled a motion in the House of Commons that would ensure Parliament was consulted on the activities of the more than 20 Security and Prosperity Partnership working groups currently harmonizing all manner of Canadian policies with U.S. standards.
Mr. Julian’s motion read as follows:
That, in the opinion of the House, the government should ensure that Parliament is informed and consulted on the progress of each of the working groups of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America by mandating that each working group file with Parliament a quarterly report to be reviewed by the appropriate standing committee, which should include information on each working group meeting, specific issues discussed, a status report on existing objectives, projects and agendas, including any new additional actions or projects decided on by the working groups, and an account of which stakeholders were consulted.
Some of the working groups have websites containing minimal information but most of the SPP is being carried out in secret with absolutely no parliamentary oversight.
