Local B.C. council passes motion demanding a “democratic mandate” for the SPP
February 20, 2008
Posted by Stuart Trew
The Council of the Village of New Denver has passed a motion in support of the position of NDP MP Alex Atamanenko that implementation of the Security and Prosperity Partnership be stopped while the Canadian government seeks a democratic mandate from the people and Parliament is given more oversight of the process.
The full motion, which carried at a regular council meeting on February 12, 2008, reads as follows:
That the Council of the Village of New Denver supports the position of Alex Atamanenko, MP, B.C. Southern Interior, in calling on the Federal Government of Canada to stop further implementation of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America with the United States and Mexico until there is a democratic mandate from the people of Canada, Parliamentary oversight, and consideration of its profound consequences on Canada’s existence as a sovereign nation and its ability to adopt autonomous and sustainable economic, social, and environmental policies, and urge the Government of Canada to conduct a transparent and accountable public debate of the SPP process, involving meaningful public consultations with civil society and a full legislative review, including the work, recommendations and reports of all SPP working groups, and a full debate and a vote in Parliament.
A copy of the motion was sent by letter to Atamanenko, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, NDP Trade Critic Peter Julian, Liberal leader Stéphane Dion, NDP leader Jack Layton, Bloc leader Gilles Duceppe, the Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Governments, the Union of B.C. Municipalities and the Council of Canadians.
The Council of Canadians has been demanding public consultations and a full parliamentary debate on the SPP since 2005 and encourages other city and local councils to pass similar motions to this one from the Village of New Denver.
