SPP Ministerial meeting set for February 27 and 28 in Los Cabos, Mexico

February 21, 2008
Posted by Rick Arnold, Common Frontiers

An article in La Jornada reports that the next Security and Prosperity Partnership ministerial meeting will take place February 27 and 28 in Los Cabos, Mexico. This is a pre-New Orleans meeting of SPP ministers from Mexico, Canada and the United States to set an agenda for the next full summit, taking place April 21 and 22.

Last year’s ministerial meeting happened in Ottawa on February 23 and was attended by SPP ministers Stockwell Day, David Emerson, Peter McKay and their counterparts in Mexico and the United States, including U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez. Also in attendance were members of the North American Competitiveness Council, which tabled 50-odd recommendations on North American economic and security integration.

On the official agenda in Los Cabos, according to the article in La Jornada, are regional security, crime and terrorism, frontier security, sustainability and renewable energy. The article indicates that Mexican PAN party officials will likely highlight their stepped up efforts to privatize segments of Mexico's energy sector, and their progress with the Merida Initiative (or Plan Mexico), which focuses on incorporating “anti-terrorist” equipment and training from the U.S. army in the “war on drugs.”
