Liberals, Conservatives ignore Charter; cooperate on Bill C-3
February 5, 2008
Posted by Brent Patterson
As reported in this morning's Globe and Mail, "The Conservatives and the Liberals joined forces last night in favour of new legislation on security certificates for terrorism suspects just before a Supreme Court deadline invalidates the old system later this month. In the House of Commons last night, the two biggest parties adopted, with a vote of 191 to 54, a committee report on Bill C-3, and the final vote on the legislation is expected to go through in the same way tonight or tomorrow."
The Canwest News Service added that, “The Bloc Quebecois and the NDP have said they will oppose the bill in the House, where on Monday night MPs voted 191-54 in favour of approving a handful of opposition-sponsored amendments to the legislation.”
Canwest also reported that, "So far only two Liberals, Ontario MPs Colleen Beaumier and Andrew Telegdi, have publicly opposed C-3. The support of their remaining colleagues is enough to ensure the bill's passage through the House in a final vote that's expected either Tuesday or Wednesday." Ms. Beaumier represents Brampton West and Mr. Telgedi represents Kitchener-Waterloo.
Monday's vote can be found at /www2.parl.gc.ca.
Only last week Paul Cavalluzzo, Toronto lawyer and former lead counsel of the Maher Arar inquiry, said Bill C-3 does not meet the standards of the Constitution, despite several ammendments proposed in the committee report that MPs voted on last night.
Here's a list of MPs who voted in favour of adopting that report and who will likely vote in favour of Bill C-3 when it comes to the House for a final vote either tonight or tomorrow. You can find their email addresses here.
