Group calls for major call-in day of action against the "new" security certificate law, Bill C-3

January 25, 2008
Posted by Stuart Trew

The Coalition Justice for Adil Charkaoui is calling for a national day of action TODAY (Friday, January 25) against the "new" security certificate law -- against secret trials, deportation to torture, and a two-tiered justice system.

The security certificate is an immigration process that allows the government to detain indefinitely non-citizens who they claim pose a threat to national security. Since 9/11, the process has been used to detain non-citizens with suspected terrorism links for up to six years in some cases. These individuals cannot see the evidence against them, which is why the Supreme Court ruled the process unconstitutional last February.

The government has re-introduced the security certificate process virtually untouched in Bill C-3 -- in all likelihood to prove to Washington that Canada is not "soft on terror." Several lawyers have claimed that the new law will also fail a constitutional challenge, and yet many MPs are prepared to vote in favour of the fundamentally unjust process that essentially creates a two-tier justice system in Canada.

As today will be the last day before Parliament re-opens its session, the Coalition Justice for Adil Charkaoui is hoping to flood MP's offices with calls and faxes denouncing Bill C-3. You can call your MP or send them a message by fax or email by clicking here.

As the NDP has already indicated that the party is in favour of abolishing the security certificate, the Coalition is asking people to focus on the Liberals, Conservatives and the Bloc.
