Council of Canadians to mobilize in Ottawa, Montebello and across the country from August 19-20, 2007

SUNDAY, AUGUST 19, 1:00 p.m. — RALLY IN OTTAWA ON PARLIAMENT HILL

SUNDAY, AUGUST 19, 4:00 p.m. — PUBLIC FORUM
The Council of Canadians is working with a other labour and social justice groups to organize a public forum in Ottawa. This event will feature Canadian, U.S. and Mexican speakers, focusing on how the SPP affects energy security, water, the environment, security policy, and other key issues. MONDAY, AUGUST 20 — NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
The Council of Canadians will be organizing a National Day of Action Against the SPP on August 20. This will allow people across Canada to “plug in” to the resistance at the Montebello summit. Council of Canadians’ chapters will be organizing public forums and community picnics, lobbying of Members of Parliament, distributing handbills, and speaking to the media. MONDAY, AUGUST 20 PROTEST IN MONTEBELLO
The Council of Canadians will be joining with other groups from across Ontario and Quebec to protest at the summit site in Montebello. More details to come.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 21 Voyageur canoes to Montebello

A group of Canadians, including the Council of Canadians and the Raging Grannies, will set forth on voyageur canoes from the shores of the Ottawa River on Tuesday morning, August 21 to proclaim this message to all Canadians and to send this message to Bush, Harper and Calderon. “Our fresh water must not be contaminated, mistreated and exploited!”

Depart 9:00 a.m. from the shores of the MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre
(#3635 on Highway 17 north side, 27 kilometres east of Ottawa, 5 kilometres from the town of Cumberland and 1 kilometer to Rockland) to Montebello.

  • CoC Free Film Evening, August 15, Sadleir House, Peterborough - excerpts from the chapter SPP public meeting (June 12), including speeches from Tony Clarke, Rick Arnold, and a chapter SPP skit.
  • "Send-Off to Montebello", August 18, outside Farmers' Market - chapter street theatre: "Marriage at Montebello - the secret SPP wedding" - media invited - MPP and federal candidates invited to send us off in recognition of using democratic right to protest peacefully and present our democratic Challenge to the Federal Government.
  • Chapter's CHALLENGE TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF CANADA "on scroll" will be presented to the government. Copies have been distributed to the local media, MPP, federal candidates and to members of the public canvassed at Farmers' Market.

Owen Sound, ON

Grey-Bruce chapter will be providing information regarding the SPP at the local market, folk festival and August 20-21 at City Hall.

We will be outside of the town hall, distributing information regarding the SPP, selling T-Shirts and tickets to the University Women's "Maude Barlow" event on September 20th. We hope to be there from 8AM to 5PM both Monday and Tuesday. Look for the Council of Canadians banner and the "Shhhh-Secret Negotiations" T-shirt. If you can't stop, honk as you go by.

The decisions that Harper, Bush and Calderon make will affect the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the human rights and civil liberties we enjoy.

Silenced bicyclists and silenced walkers are coming out to our media to ask the Media to give us a voice on SPP. Please decorate your bike, scooter, or walker with your own flair. The Edmonton chapter will be joining the Edmonton Activist community at a March and Rally for Affordable Housing. A member of the Edmonton chapter will be one of the speakers at this event and will talk about the SPP. This event start at city hall at 12:45 pm with a march to the legislature for a rally at 2:00 PM.

From August 15th to September 7th, approximately 20 cyclists from across Canada will cycle north across Alberta to the Athabasca Tar Sands, one of the biggest mega-industrial project in the world.
