Council of Canadians to address Parliament on water impacts of recent AbitibiBowater NAFTA settlement
Ottawa – Trade lawyer and Council of Canadians board member Steven Shrybman will address Standing Committee on International Trade hearings this week on the impact of the recent AbitibiBowater NAFTA investment settlement on water and water management. The company's $130-million lawsuit against the Newfoundland and federal governments included a claim for water and timber rights that AbitibiBowater cannot legally own. The Harper government's settlement creates a dangerous precedent for future NAFTA investment challenges to provincial and federal conservation measures, and opens the doors for more private claims to public water sources, Mr. Shrybman will tell the committee.
