In 1987 he and Maude Barlow co-chaired the Action Canada Network (ACN), the largest coalition of civil society organizations and labour unions ever assembled in Canada to mobilize opposition to the free trade agenda. He co-founded the Polaris Institute in 1997, aiming to challenge corporate influence and empower grassroots movements. Clarke’s work has left a lasting impact on global justice movements.
“It was a great honour to receive the Right Livelihood Award with Tony in 2005. Tony was a tireless crusader for justice and used his considerable skills to work for the most vulnerable in our society. We will miss him” – Maude Barlow, former Chair, Council of Canadians.
