Avaaz.org is highlighting that the Ontario government “is going to let a mining company destroy part of Temagami’s magical old growth forest” and is asking for your help to stop them.
They would like your help to “pressure (the Minister of Northern Development and Mines Rick) Bartolucci to buy out the lease and end the mining threat.” How to do this? By placing ads in newspapers in Bartolucci’s riding of Sudbury, once 10,000 people come together to support this effort.
The Council of Canadians began raising concerns about the threat of a gold mine to Temagami’s Wolf Lake back in December 2011, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=12789. In a recent blog, energy campaigner Maryam Adrangi noted, ‘Mining threatens the ecosystem and the health of the entire Chiniguchi watershed’, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=15146. And Ontario-Quebec regional organizer Mark Calzavara has reported, ‘The Council of Canadians is part of the Wolf Lake Coalition which represents businesses and organizations who support the Wolf Lake Forest Reserve and its inclusion within the Chiniguchi Waterway Provincial Park’, http://canadians.org/blog/?p=14943.
To add your name to the petition, please go to http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/Save_Temagami_1/?bkNlMcb&v=18194. As of this moment they have 7,451 signatures, so we’re hoping Council of Canadians activists can help them to get to 10,000.
