ACTION ALERT: Phone blitz to protect wild salmon and Lelu Island from Petronas LNG!

BC Premier Christy Clark and the BC government were in Ottawa on February 4, 2016 pushing the federal government to approve the Petronas-led proposal for an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) terminal on Lelu Island (also known as Lax U’u’la), even though the people of Lax Kw’alaams and their hereditary leaders have said no.

The BC government is completely disregarding the hereditary leadership of the Gitwilgyoots, and the dozens of hereditary leaders from neighbouring Indigenous nations who are standing with the Lax Kw’alaams community and who signed the Lelu Island Declaration against LNG. Continuing to push LNG despite the Lelu Island Declaration and Lax Kw’alaam’s unanimous vote opposing the LNG proposal goes against the numerous Supreme Court rulings that show that the true title holders of the land are the hereditary leaders, and they are saying no to Petronas’ PNW LNG project on Lelu Island!

Take action by phoning, emailing or tweeting the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna and urge her to:

  1. meet with Hereditary Chief Yahaan and other hereditary leaders of Lelu, the rightful title holders to the land;

  2. respect that Lax Kw’alaams has said no – loud and clear – to LNG on Lelu, and

  3. that this project be rejected as it threatens the second largest wild salmon run in the country!

Minister McKenna will make the final decision on the project within the next two months. She holds the power to reject this project by choosing not to sign off on it. The feds have been very quiet on this project so far, so it’s unclear what they will decide. The Trudeau government has committed to ban oil tankers on the northern coast of BC in order to protect the coast. Let’s urge the federal government to also protect the northern coast from the Petronas-led LNG terminal!
