On November 30, Kairos received notice from the Canadian International Development Agency that their project proposal for 2009-2013 had been declined. They were not given an explanation for this decision, other than that their program no longer fit with CIDA priorities.
Still, their 2009-2013 proposal had been approved at every level of CIDA before being declined on November 30. This decision terminates a 35-year history of cooperation between CIDA and Kairos and its predecessor organizations, and compromises the work of human rights and ecological integrity in the developing world.
Kairos is asking that you write your Member of Parliament, Prime Minster Stephen Harper (pm@pm.gc.ca), the Minister of International Cooperation (oda.b@parl.gc.ca), the president of CIDA (Margaret.Biggs@acdi-cida.gc.ca (and to cc KAIROS at info@kairoscanada.org) and ask them to work to reverse this decision.
Their action alert is on their website at http://kairoscanada.org/index.php?id=71&no_cache=1&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=893.
Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow’s concerns about this funding cut were noted in a Canadian Press report that can be read at http://dailygleaner.canadaeast.com/canadaworld/article/877276.
