Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow presented CUPE national president Paul Moist and national secretary-treasurer Charles Fleury with our Activist of the Year award in Ottawa today.

The award states, “The Council of Canadians is proud to present the Activist of the Year award to the Canadian Union of Public Employees in recognition of your unwavering commitment to social justice, fighting privatization of Canada’s public services, and supporting public sector workers.”

CUPE is Canada’s largest union, with over 628,000 members across the country. CUPE represents workers in health care, emergency services, education, early learning and child care, municipalities, social services, libraries, utilities, transportation, airlines and more.

Barlow spoke about our friendship with CUPE and our partnership in fighting for public health care, public water, trade justice and democracy. She highlighted that CUPE is a model of social unionism and its support of civil society is incredibly important.

At an earlier presentation during our annual conference in Hamilton this past October, Pam Beattie, executive assistant to the national president of CUPE and Council of Canadians Board member, also accepted the award on behalf of the union.
