Blue October: Global Action Month to Defend Our Water

This is the 8th year that we celebrate Blue October!

Blue October is an international month of action to challenge the corporate control of water and to protect it as a human right and a shared natural resource available to all. The battle to defend water is growing as corporations and governments are trying to expand mining and dam projects, polluting and, more recently, fracking in the planet. For this reason, we have decided to dedicate this Blue October to defending water sources.

We hope you’ll join us in this historic international month of action by organizing activities to draw attention to water issues in your community. Activities can range from the very small and local to national events.

You can help make Blue October 2013 a success by endorsing Blue October and by organizing an action or event, big or small!

BACKGROUNDER:

In solidarity with all who defend water justice around the world, Blue October was launched in 2006. October was chosen in honour of Uruguay’s historic constitutional amendment on the human right to water. On October 31, 2004, the people of Uruguay voted to amend their constitution to recognize this fundamental right. The Constitution now guarantees that piped water and sanitation is available to all Uruguayans, and it bans for-profit private water and sanitation services. Blue October calls on communities to challenge the corporate control of water through global action! In total, 46 countries have participated in the last 7 years and many more activities were organized.
