The Council of Canadians mourns the passing of Theodore Geraets.
Council of Canadians honorary chairperson Maude Barlow says, “Theo was a beloved founding member of the Council of Canadians and remained a valued member for over three decades. We mourn his passing.”
Barlow adds, “Theo also set up the first Council of Canadians Ottawa chapter which he led for quite a long time.”
Former Ottawa Centre Member of Parliament Paul Dewar notes, “Theodore was a bright, giving person who challenged us all to be more thoughtful of each other and the planet we share. He truly was a ‘good person’.”
Geraets’ obituary in the Ottawa Citizen notes, “University of Ottawa Professor Emeritus of Philosophy passed away suddenly but peacefully at 91 years of age at the Ottawa General Hospital December 21, 2017.”
It adds, “He will be remembered by family (Canadian, Dutch, British), friends, former students and colleagues in philosophy and theology, friends in The First Nations community, as well as cottage owners for his initiative, leadership, mentorship, and ongoing commitment to an optimistic vision of Canada. One in which education and ideas are valued, there is equality amongst all citizens and in the constitution, as well as protection of the environment (including his 31 Mile Lake) for future generations.”
The Council of Canadians extends our condolences to his wife Heidi, daughters Isabelle and Stephanie, his grandchildren, extended family and friends.
