The Northumberland News reports that the bottled water industry is battling against the call for Cobourg to become a blue community.
The newspaper notes, “Representatives from the bottled water industry were in Cobourg this week, following a recent call on council to ban or phase out the sale of bottled water at public facilities. According to John Challinor II, the director of corporate affairs for Nestlé Waters Canada, Town staff and local residents should have the freedom to purchase and consume ‘the legal, federally regulated beverage of their choice’ on municipal property.”
In late May, Northumberland Today reported that 14-year-old Robyn Hamlyn spoke to Cobourg council’s committee of the whole about the municipality becoming a blue community.
At that time, it was reported, “Mayor Gil Brocanier (appears to be agreeable and) said that Lakefront Utility Services Inc. has a goal of opening five public water-bottle refilling stations around town. …The town’s environmental advisory committee and its parks and recreation advisory committee (will) prepare recommendations on how Cobourg can become a blue community…”
Cobourg is located 95 kilometres east of Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario.
