A Bruce Power media release has just announced that they, “will delay plans to ship 16 steam generators to Sweden for recycling to allow further discussion with First Nations, Métis and others seeking additional information.”
While it is evident that there is strong opposition from First Nations against these shipments – http://canadians.org/campaignblog/?p=4883 – it may also be that the ongoing nuclear disaster in Japan and possible delays in securing permits from other jurisdictions has more to do with Bruce Power’s decision.
While the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has now given its permission for these shipments, and Bruce Power claims the shipments could not harm the Great Lakes, Aurele Gervais, a spokesperson for the CNSC, did note in a media interview when the CNSC had delayed its decision on the shipments in mid-January, the situation where, “a uranium shipment was diverted from its destination in China after rough seas damaged the containers used to haul the material.”
Today’s media release adds, “Bruce Power will not set a date for shipping the decommissioned steam generators, but will take the necessary time to meet with First Nation and Métis groups to answer any questions they may have about the project.”
Last week Council of Canadians staff were in Owen Sound to meet with local opponents to the shipment of radioactive waste on the Great Lakes from their harbour.
