NEWS: Forget fighter jets, fight climate change

The Toronto Sun reports that, “Canada should ditch spending on the military and the Afghan mission and put the money towards the environment, a coalition of left-wing activist groups said Thursday.”

“The coalition of groups lead by the Council of Canadians cited an Environics Research poll they commissioned which shows that 71% of those polled strongly or somewhat agreed with the statement that all the money spent on wars and the military would be better spent fighting climate change.”

“‘The results indicate Canadians understand that the climate crisis requires a change in economic, social and environmental priorities. If Canadians were deciding our climate policy, we would be following a very different path,’ said Andrea Harden-Donahue of the Council of Canadians.”

“The group…also found that most Canadians polled support giving a world climate court jurisdiction over Canadian governments and corporations.”

“The poll concludes that 77% of Canadians agreed with the statement: ‘There should be a World Climate and Environmental Justice Tribunal to judge and penalize countries and corporations whose actions have contributed to climate change and damaged the environment.'”

“In addition to the Council of Canadians, the coalition behind the poll included KAIROS, Canadian Union of Postal Workers, Indigenous Environmental Network, Common Frontiers, Public Service Alliance of Canada and Toronto Bolivia Solidarity.”
