The United Nations reports, “Former Ghanaian president John Agyekum Kufuor will head the U.N.-backed partnership known as Sanitation and Water for All, which works to achieve universal and sustainable access to decent sanitation and drinking water. …The partnership, which brings together governments, donors, civil society organizations, development partners and several UN agencies, works also with UN Water and the UN World Health Organization (WHO) to produce a global assessment report on drinking water.”

“Kufuor will chair the next high-level meeting of the partnership in April in Washington D.C., which will bring together finance and water ministers from developing countries to discuss the economic benefits of investing in sanitation and water.”

Ghana Business News adds, “The Sanitation and Water for All High Level Meeting is held every two years and brings together Ministers of Finance from developing countries along with sector Ministers, and Ministers of Development Cooperation from donor countries and high-level representatives from development banks and other donor institutions. A statement signed by Mr Frank Agyekum, spokesperson of the former President, said the Meeting addresses the lack of priority given to sanitation and water as a development intervention, the poor targeting of aid in the sector and the need for robust planning and institutions. (The upcoming meeting) will focus on the significant economic gains that can be made from investing in sanitation and water and the costs of failing to invest.”

The Sanitation and Water for All High Level meeting will take place on April 20, 2012 at the World Bank in Washington, DC.
