Kamloops This Week reports, “In May, city council decided to proceed with a two-level, 350 stall parkade in the Lorne Street parking lot adjacent to Riverside Park. …(Then in August) council gave final approval to a bylaw to borrow $8 million to build the parkade, triggering the alternative-approval process.”
City-led information sessions found a 68 per cent negative public response to the proposed parkade.
The Kamloops Daily News adds, “Councillors Tina Lange (in favour of the parkade) and Denis Walsh (opposed) will go head-to-head in a debate on Thursday (September 15) over construction of the Lorne Street parkade.”
“The event is co-sponsored by the Council of Canadians, the Kamloops Voters’ Society and the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Area.”
“The Council of Canadians issued a press release saying ‘the more information a person has the better he is equipped to vote intelligently on any given topic. The parkade in the park issue is no different and in helping to collect (1,100) signatures (in a week) for the counter petition on borrowing bunds for the proposed parkade, it has become apparent that such information is sadly lacking for many people, although the City’s points are posted on their website.'”
