NEWS: Roy Brady, ‘a thorn in the foot of the establishment’

Council of Canadians Board member Roy Brady is profiled in a Peterborough Examiner article. It notes, “Locally, the Peterborough native and retired Grade 7 and 8 teacher is the face of The Left: front man for The Raging Grannies, present at rallies, protests, demonstrations and assorted community stunts, a persistent instigator, dissident, all-purpose pest and thorn in the side of the establishment.”

“Brady, 69, is concerned about a lot of things: social justice, pipelines, keeping a casino out of the city, fairness, poverty, health care, sharing, the environment and democracy in general. …Local activist groups Brady has been affiliated with over the years: Council of Canadians, Safe and Green Energy, No Casino in the City, Peterborough Health Coalition, Common Causes, Purple Onion Festival, Our Space, Occupy Peterborough, Transit Riders, I Love CBC Peterborough, Peterborough Poverty Reduction Network, Community Food Network, Income Security Working Group, Peterborough Coalition for Social Justice, Stop the Camera Coalition, Peterborough Electricity Coalition.”

The article also notes, “Brady has been following the tritium cleanup at Shield Source Inc. after the manufacturer of self-luminous safety signs announced the closure of its Airport Rd. factory in March. He is concerned about what he calls the slow pace of the cleanup, and was lunching with (David) Goyette (Mayor Daryl Bennett’s executive assistant) to update him. …He and Goyette talked not just about Shield Source but also about ‘lots of other things’, Brady said. ‘I consider him much more progressive than some of the people he works with’, he said. ‘He certainly likes to know the ins and outs of everything. He’s very aware of what’s going on.’ Goyette was receptive and lunch was pleasant, Brady said. And they split the tab.”
