The Council of Canadians Peterborough chapter took good advantage of the opportunities presented by a municipal election public forum last night.

MyKawartha.com reports, “Voters had a chance to speak with local municipal candidates during This Week’s Electionfest at the Evinrude Centre on Wednesday (Oct. 22) night. …[Many strolled] through the event, meeting with council and mayor candidates, and three special interest groups, including the Peterborough Greenspace CoalitionNo Casino Peterborough, and Fluoride-Free Peterborough.”

The news article highlights, “Longstanding community advocate Roy Brady had a project to tackle through his involvement with the Peterborough chapter of the Canadians. He polled each of the candidates to see whether they’d commit to attending a public forum in the next two months with a focus on improving the municipal democratic process. Most of the candidates agreed to attend… Mr. Brady is a familiar face in the council chambers, making delegations to councillors on a variety of hot-button issues.”

Other chapters in Ontario have been involved in this municipal election including the Thunder Bay chapter – which issued a report card on the positions taken by candidates on the controversial Energy East pipeline proposal – and the Hamilton chapter – which called on mayoral candidates to endorse the principles of the blue communities project.

The municipal election takes place on October 27.
