The Council of Canadians Regina chapter attended a Delivering Community Power session on June 19.

The vision of Delivering Community Power is this: “Our postal service can deliver the sustainable infrastructure of the next economy: postal banking that finances green energy, services for seniors, farm-to-table food delivery, coast-to-coast charging stations for electric cars, and much more… An equitable, climate-friendly economy is in sight. Our post office can deliver it.”

The outreach for the meeting highlighted, “Postal workers have put forward a bold vision to make Canada Post into an engine for a climate-friendly economy by investing in green jobs that reduce emissions while benefitting low-income and rural communities. Now, the Harper-appointed administration of Canada Post is planning to lock them out of their jobs in July, while a public review decides the future of this profitable public service. Dru Jay from Friends of Public Services and a representative from CUPW will discuss the postal workers’ vision and the alliance that’s backing it. Opportunities for networking and discussion will follow a brief presentation.”

The Friends of Public Services, which helped organize the meeting in Regina, has posted, “We had a great discussion in Regina, with folks from different backgrounds talking Delivering Community Power and support for postal workers. Big thanks to Briarpatch Magazine, Council of Canadians and the Leap folks for helping to organize!”

And chapter activist Jim Elliott notes, “A small but mighty group out for the Friends of Public Services strategy session.”

The Council of Canadians was also at the Delivering Community Power session in Winnipeg on June 18.

Jay comments, “The Delivering Community Power tour has meant that I get to work with some of the most lovely people. Overnight bus ride notwithstanding, this weekend saw two really great events in Regina and Winnipeg and I’m feeling energized. I’m pretty stoked about the alliances that we’re building (posties-climate justice organizers-indigenous-anti-austerity groups…) and I think there’s real transformative potential here.”

The tour is in Edmonton tonight (June 21), then proceeds to Lethbridge (June 23), Vancouver (June 27), and Victoria (June 28).

While postal workers will be in a legal strike position as of July 2, CUPW believes it’s likely that they could be locked out before that date.
