Remembering Janet Walter

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Janet Walter, one of the original members of the Red Deer Chapter and a long-time supporter of the Council of Canadians. She died on September 24, 2023, at 91 years old.

Janet was a powerhouse in her community, working tirelessly to advocate for and educate people in the Red Deer area on issues of environmental and climate justice. Alongside the Red Deer Chapter of the Council of Canadians, Janet was a driving force behind countless events, rallies, town halls, and conferences on a wide variety of topics, including fracking, protecting the Rockies, a just transition, and more. She was also an incredible connector, constantly cultivating relationships that blossomed into collaboration and action to defend the commons and her community. Janet’s commitment to lifelong learning and her ability to use that learning to motivate others was unparalleled.

We offer our condolences to Janet’s family and friends and honour her life, work, and commitment to building a better world.
