Free Rubén Herrera!
Yesterday, REMA and Mapder members (Mexican movements of those affected by mining and dams) delivered at the Guatemalan Embassy in Mexico a letter to demand Rubén Herrera’s freedom. Ruben Herrera is a member of CPO (Western Peoples’ Council) that has been central in raising awareness in this region in Guatemala regarding mining and dam projects. CPO has been very successful doing community consultations that have shown these projects are not welcomed.
On March 15, 2013, Rubén was apprehended. He is charged with kidnap, terrorism and more when there is proof that he wasn’t even in the area in the date of these accusations. However Rubén has been an important leader in the struggle against Hidro Santa Cruz hydroelectric project. This project is opposed by local communities; more than 100 communitarian documents with thousands of signatures back this fact. But the government of Guatemala has sided with the transnational and criminalized descent.
For this reason, Mexican organizations have shown their concern and joined the demand: Free Rubén Herrera!
