Smiths Falls, Napanee, North Grenville oppose Bill 237

The YourOttawaRegion.com reports that councilors in Smiths Falls, Ontario have passed a resolution against Bill 237. Their resolution has been sent to “the Ministry of the Environment, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, the Ontario Municipal Water Association, the Ontario Water Works Association, and M.P.P. Randy Hillier.”

The news report highlights, “Bill 237 is not sitting well with Smiths Falls councillors because if it is passed, the bill would severely undermine the ability of municipalities to maintain public control over water and wastewater infrastructure.”

“The Council of Canadians state: the act could result in the forced corporatization of municipal water and wastewater services, a loss of public control, steep increases in tariffs for Ontarians and absolve the provincial and federal governments of their responsibilities to address Ontario’s water and waste water infrastructure.”

NAPANEE
“The Town of Greater Napanee has already passed a resolution on Jan. 12, and sent a letter to Gerretsen on Jan. 22.”
