Thunder Bay chapter walks in solidarity with the women of the Port Arthur Health Clinic

The Council of Canadians Thunder Bay chapter took part in the ‘Walk for the Women of the Port Arthur Health Clinic’ tonight.

In advance of the march, CBC reported, “Supporters of the striking workers at the Port Arthur Health Centre will hold a walk on Monday evening to urge the workers’ employer to come to the bargaining table. About 65 appointment secretaries, medical aides and medical records staffers have been on the picket line since April 9. All of them are women. Unifor, their union, says low wages and a lack of permanent stable employment are key issues in the dispute, and the employer has twice refused mediation, the union said.”

As noted here, “Unifor Local 229 is demanding a living wage an end to precarious work, but this employer seems bent on continuing to devalue women’s work and make profits off the back of these workers. Over 60 per cent of the workers are casually employed, including some who have worked consistent, full-time hours for more than 15 years. Most of the workers experience not only low wages, barely above minimum wage, but also receive no health benefits and no set work schedule from one week to the next. On April 27, the overwhelming majority of workers rejected a sub-standard final offer from the employer. Since then, the employer refuses to meet with a mediator or the union to reach a settlement.”
