The Council of Canadians supports the call for a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women.
The numbers are staggering and shocking. On May 1, APTN National News reported, “RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson told reporters Thursday that the federal police force had compiled a total of 1,186 cases of murdered and missing Indigenous women. Of that number, 1,026 have been murdered and 160 are missing, said Paulson, who spoke to reporters after appearing before a Parliamentary committee.”
Today, James Anaya, the United Nations special rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous peoples, recommended in his report The situation of indigenous peoples in Canada that, “the federal Government should undertake a comprehensive, nation-wide inquiry into the issue of missing and murdered aboriginal woman and girls, organized in consultation with indigenous peoples.”
The Harper government continues to say that a national inquiry is unnecessary.
