Last night, Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow spoke at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto answering the question, “Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right?” The panel which featured Maude, Queen’s University professor Bruce Pardy, UN-Water chair Zafar Adeel, and chaired by Mark Kingwell, was part of the museum’s ‘Water: The Forum’ series.
The Toronto Star reports this afternoon that, “This weekend, to celebrate the power and wonder of H2O, ROM officially opens Water: The Exhibition. It’s a project that offers immersion, until Sept. 5, in the one substance that unites all living creatures. Exhibit curator Julian Kingston…hopes Water provides the incentive and practical illustrations that will enable visitors to see how they can act locally to protect and conserve water. Public forums leading up to the opening have featured Maude Barlow, from the Council of Canadians, on drinking water as a fundamental human right.”
In attendance at last night’s forum was York University chapter activist Darlene Drecun, seen here with Maude Barlow. Simcoe Region chapter activist Marianne Else was there too. She notes that, “Maude did a fabulous job and she got three rounds of applause within her closing statement – one of them on bottled water. The hall was filled. I filmed most of it and I will put it on our You Tube channel soon, http://www.youtube.com/user/simcoeregionchapter.”
