Mexico City-based Blue Planet Project organizer Claudia Campero Arena recently participated in a University of Alberta ‘International Week 2011’ presentation – by Skype – titled, ‘Climate Justice: Whose Voice Is Heard? Alberta in Dialogue with Mexico’ on February 4 in Edmonton. The forum was organized by Council of Canadians Prairies organizer Scott Harris and Russell Charlton of Public Interest Alberta.
The forum with Claudia was promoted as, “Is society hearing the voices of those most impacted by climate change? Alberta locals come together to have dialogue and discussion on confronting the climate crisis, to hear reports from COP16, to share perspectives and struggles with the people of Mexico, and to find ways towards a truly just solution.”
Claudia is a founding member of COMDA (Mexican Committee for Defense of Water Rights). She has been involved with numerous non-governmental organizations and campaigns to secure the right to water, including the first Blue October international day of action in 2006. Claudia has also been involved in the campaign to enshrine the right to water in the Mexican constitution. She holds a Masters in Urban Development Planning from the University College London, where her dissertation focused on water governance, conflict and social justice in Mexico City. Claudia was also a keynote speaker at the Council of Canadians 22nd annual general meeting in Kelowna in October 2007.
