The Council of Canadians Peterborough-Kawarthas chapter is hosting a free public forum with Brigette DePape on Tuesday November 1 at 8 pm at Market Hall Performing Arts in Peterborough. The evening also includes musical entertainment, plus open mic presentations and supporting entertainment from seven or eight local, progressive organizations. The event is noted on the Market Hall website,

DePape was a Senate page when she came to public attention on June 3, 2011. On that day, during the first Throne Speech of the new ‘majority’ Harper government, she silently held up a sign that said ‘Stop Harper!’. She was fired from her job, and nicknamed by the media ‘the rogue page’.

The following week, the Council of Canadians hired Brigette to write a paper on the importance of civil disobedience.

On September 22, we launched her report ‘Thinking Outside the Ballot Box: How People Power Can Stop the Harper Agenda and Create Fundamental Change‘. The French-language version of the report – Sortir de l’urne éléctorale: Comment le pouvoir de la population peut contrer les plans de Stephen Harper et provoquer des changements fondamentaux – was first made available this past weekend for the ‘Indignez-Vous! Hope in Resistance’ conference.

The report can be read in French at and in English
