I will be away on vacation between July 4 and August 5, and other staff will be taking their holidays too, but the work of the Council of Canadians continues through the summer months. A few key activities we will be involved in this July and August include:
JULY
2 – a global day of action against the dams in Patagonia
4 – a statement of concern about layoffs at Environment Canada and the impact that has on water protection
8 – our intervention in London and Brussels during the eighth round of CETA negotiations begins
10 – health care campaigner Adrienne Silnicki at a key health care conference in Toronto
14 – Maude Barlow speaks at the Assembly of First Nations annual general meeting in Moncton
19 – Maude speaks at the ‘Honouring the Water’ Indigenous water forum in Sault Ste. Marie
21 – protest in Toronto against the proposed Melancthon quarry
27 – Canadian edition of Maude’s right to water paper (in both French and English) to be released
28 – one year anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly recognizing the right to water and sanitation
30 – water campaigner Meera Karunananthan at a rights of nature conference in San Francisco
AUGUST
11 – release of the Council of Canadians-commissioned paper by Brigette DePape
12 – BC-Yukon organizer Harjap Grewal at the Wet’suwet’en camp in opposition to the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline
15 – annual financial reports from chapters are due
15 – non-violent civil disobedience actions in Washington, DC against the Keystone pipeline begin
19 – climate justice campaigner Andrea Harden-Donahue at the Alternatives summer camp in Quebec
21 – Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference in London begins
22 – deadline for annual general meeting resolutions
And come September we look forward to – more of the speaking tour against CETA (with a first date on Sept. 10 in Moncton), the first dates of the speaking tour in defence of the Great Lakes, the fuller launch of our systemchange.ca website (Sept. 12), a major health care rally in Toronto (Sept. 13), the new session of Parliament (Sept. 19), and much more.
