This afternoon Council of Canadians/ Blue Planet Project water campaigner Meera Karunananthan was in the Washington, DC studios of the Al Jazeera program ‘The Stream’ to discuss the impacts of the Canadian mining industry on water. The program’s website notes, “Beneath Canada’s mines in Latin America lies an unregulated industry… Activists say they (the Canadian mining industry) pollute and violate human rights without accountability from the Canadian government. …In this episode of The Stream, we speak to Meera Karunananthan (@meerakar) from the Council of Canadians and John McKay (@johnmckaylib), Canadian Member of Parliament.” Mexico City-based Blue Planet Project organizer Claudia Campero Arena also provided commentary during the program via Twitter. The live-program has been archived and you can view the video below or on http://stream.aljazeera.com/. As noted on their Facebook page, “The Stream (@AJStream) is a new phenomenon – a web community with its own daily show on Al Jazeera English.” As noted in the New York Times, “Al Jazeera’s English-language service can be viewed in every major European market, and is available to 130 million homes in over 100 countries via cable and satellite…” For more on the Council of Canadians concerns about mining and water, see http://canadians.org/mining.
