At this moment in Copenhagen (about 9:50 am EST), Maude Barlow has just finished speaking to about 300 people in the ‘blue hall’ at the Klimaforum on the issue of water justice.
She said that water is evaporating too quickly because of climate change.
She also noted that our displacing, mistreating and abusing of water is a cause of climate change. She said, “We need a restoration strategy for water as a key mitigation factor.”
She highlighted that the face of climate change is the two billion people who already live without adequate access to clean water, and those that die every day due to water-borne illnesses.
And she concluded that we are building a water justice movement parallel to the climate justice movement, both of which reject market solutions to these crises. She said, “Climate justice is water justice, you can’t have one without the other.”
