UPDATE: ‘System Change’ grant to Hub City Cycles Community Co-op

The Council of Canadians wants to support community-based ‘system change’ alternatives that challenge the fossil-fuel economy, climate change and so-called market-based ‘solutions’. So, on an annual basis, beginning at our gathering in Nanaimo this weekend, we’re giving a ‘legacy’ grant to a local initiative that reflects in practice what a better world looks like. This year, that support (a $1500 grant) is going to Hub City Cycles Community Co-op, a non-profit community service cooperative, and their ‘Bicycle Building and Maintenance Education Program’ for youth and children in the Nanaimo area. And we’re really pleased that they’ve put the call out for people to join us with their bikes at a rally we’re helping to organize this Saturday at 1 pm starting outside the Coast Bastion Inn! I am happy to be joining with chapter activist Jordan Ellis to present the cheque after the rally ends. To find out more, go to http://www.hubcitycycles.ca. For those in town for the conference, they do bike rentals too!
