Oakville: let's talk NAFTA

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - 19:00

Come join us on Tuesday, June 19 for a timely discussion on the untold story of North American Free Trade Agreement’s (NAFTA) polluting legacy.

We hear a lot about U.S. President Donald Trump’s whims on NAFTA, but we rarely hear about NAFTA’s devastating effects on our environment and our planet.

That is why the Council of Canadian has launched a new report, Escaping Mandatory Oil Exports: Why Canada needs to dump NAFTA’s energy proportionality rule. The report examines how NAFTA’s energy proportionality clause forces Canada to export a set percentage of its energy resources to the U.S., making it impossible for us to meet our climate pollution reduction targets.

The report is written by Dr. Gordon Laxer, professor emeritus at the University of Alberta and founder of the Parkland Institute. Dr. Laxer has published recent op-eds in the Toronto Star, Le Devoir, and the Vancouver Sun on this little-known clause in NAFTA.
