Atlantic campaign organizer (Classification 5)
Full-time Term Contract: Until December 31, 2025

Location: Remote in Atlantic Canada. Travel and evening/weekends required.

Summary

Under the general direction of the Executive Director and working in close collaboration with other members of staff and regional members, the Atlantic Campaign Organizer plans and leads mobilization, advocacy, and organizing aspects of assigned campaigns with participation from Council chapters, members, and allies.

The Atlantic Organizer works as a member of the Council’s staff to share responsibility across staff to ensure the health of the organization and to accomplish organizational goals.

The explicit goals of this position are to grow the Council’s membership, build capacity within that membership, and build up the movement demanding a just energy transition in the Atlantic region.

This position is deeply relational and strategic, building effective campaigns in the Atlantic provinces for the sake of broad political action and impact, and investing in the skills and capacity of the Council’s base.

The Atlantic Organizer should have demonstrated abilities to build the leadership and capacity of Council members and other community leaders in the Atlantic region to carry on work in their community throughout and beyond this year-long contract.

Successful candidates will show a willingness to develop new skills, take risks, build common cause across difference, and learn alongside others within the organization.

Major Responsibilities

Major responsibilities are listed below and give an overall picture of workload and priorities. Day-to-day duties will change according to the operational needs. The successful candidate will be able to pivot and adapt to changing circumstances.

Regional campaign planning and leadership execution

  • Develop regional campaigns in line with Council strategic plans and including creative strategy and tactics that escalate pressure toward a clear and measurable goal. Report on campaign progress and activities across the staff and with chapters.
  • Lead support to Council members, chapters, allies and colleagues throughout campaigns as they intervene in political processes by developing and providing a variety of tools including training, advocacy tools, strategic planning support, connecting groups across distance, and periodic in-person support. Plan and facilitate campaign workshops for in-person and virtual campaign gatherings.
  • Represent the Council publicly related to campaign goals, including public speaking and media engagement, event planning and leadership, and movement participation and provide training for members and allies in such skills.
  • Collaborate with the Council’s Digital Campaigner and external vendors, develop regional communications and digital organizing strategies and assist in drafting communications materials across platforms.
  • Hold consistent check-ins with chapter members and campaign participants regarding campaign planning, goals, progress, and opportunities for engagement.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications for this job are:

  • Commitment to the Council’s values, vision and directions.
  • At least five years of experience in grassroots organizing or campaigning, or a relevant degree or diploma and/or lived experiences.
  • Experience with climate justice and energy transition.
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle and willingness to travel around the Atlantic region.
  • Demonstrated experience working at a leadership level or leading significant aspects of a complex campaign, including a range of campaign strategies and tactics like on-the-ground mobilizations and escalation, grassroots communications, policy negotiations, and digital campaigning.
  • Contribute to an environment of respect, collegiality and professionalism within the work environment.
  • Utilize tact, discretion and judgement always, including within the Council’s teams and with external partners, allies, and stakeholders.
  • Experience in policy research and analysis, including direct engagement with legislative offices and political decision-makers.
  • Demonstrated experience working with broad coalitions and volunteers on a shared goal and accountability.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, conflict resolution and negotiation skills and abilities including experience with media engagement and public speaking.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and take initiative.
  • Strong knowledge of current Canadian and in particular Atlantic economic, social and political issues.
  • Demonstrated project management experience with an ability to prioritize and effectively handle competing demands.
  • Strong computer skills, including virtual meeting tools and participatory virtual meeting facilitation, and Microsoft Office suite as well as various communications platforms such as Slack and Action Network.

Preferred candidates will also demonstrate a combination of the following qualifications: 

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Training or experience with in-person and online workshop development and facilitation.
  • Experience working in more than one geographic region across Canada.
  • Fluency in French.
