Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Campaigns and Organizing and working in close collaboration with other members of staff, Campaigners plan and lead mobilization, advocacy, and organizing aspects of assigned campaigns with participation from Council chapters, members, and allies.  Campaigners work as a member of the Council’s Political Team and share responsibility across staff to ensure the health of the organization and to accomplish organizational goals.

This position is deeply relational and strategic, building effective campaigns for the sake of broad political action and impact. Campaigners develop a range of skills as they integrate community and regional organizing with long-term policy and political change. Successful candidates will show a willingness to develop new skills and learn alongside others within the organization.

Major Responsibilities

Percentages below are intended to give an overall picture of workload and priorities. Day to day duties will change according to the annual calendar and operational needs.

National campaign planning and leadership (50%):

  1. Campaign planning & evaluation: Work with staff team to plan campaigns from start to finish, in line with Council strategic plans and including creative strategy and tactics that escalate pressure toward a clear and measurable goal. Draft and report on all related campaign plans, including operational plans and work plans, and participate in regular mid-term and post-campaign evaluation processes. Report on campaign progress and activities across the staff and with chapters.
  2. Campaign leadership: Lead support to Council members, chapters, allies and colleagues throughout campaigns as they intervene in political processes by providing a variety of tools including trainings, drafting advocacy tools, strategic planning support, connecting groups across distance, and periodic in-person support. Represent the Council publicly related to campaign goals, including public speaking and media engagement, event planning and leadership, and movement participation. Plan and facilitate campaign workshops for in-person and virtual gatherings.  
  3. Campaign communications support: Collaborating with communications staff, develop national communications and digital organizing strategies and assist in drafting communications materials across platforms.  
  4. Member communications and outreach: Hold consistent check-ins with chapters and members regarding campaign planning, goals, progress, and opportunities for engagement. Answer complex and strategic member inquiries. Working with the regional organizers, complete outreach to Council chapters, members, and possible new members to expand organizing presence in strategic areas. Support organizational development strategies.

National advocacy (20%):

  1. Track and report on key legislative and political changes related to campaign portfolio. Work with other staff to develop policy principles for related files.
  2. Lead advocacy actions related to the portfolio, including meetings and interventions with decision-makers, committees, other legislative processes.
  3. Draft and use advocacy materials, including FAQ documents, leave-behinds, sign-on letters, petitions, and others.
  4. Coalition participation (15%): Strategic participation and convening aligned with national strategic plan and campaign goals.

Organizational planning and reporting (15%):

  1. Contribute to an environment of respect, collegiality and professionalism within the work environments.
  2. Utilize tact, discretion and judgement at all times, including within the Council’s teams and with external partners, allies, and stakeholders.
  3. Contribute to cross-team projects, working groups and campaigns while building a rapport with colleagues from other teams.
  4. Participate in the planning and implementation of the Council’s long-term and annual plans and strategies.
  5. Participate in regular joint work planning and work plan review sessions and annual performance evaluations.
  6. Participate in team meetings to coordinate work, resolve operational issues and ensure harmonious relations amongst team members.
  7. Contribute to the preparation of reports to the (Co-)Executive Director(s) and the rest of the organization as required.
  8. Submit monthly expense reports and reconciliations, assist in managing campaign administration and budgets, maintain working files, participate in hiring committees as requested.
  9. In collaboration with development staff, assist in planning, drafting, and completing development projects within campaign portfolio.

Position Qualifications

  • The minimum qualifications for this position are:
  • Commitment to the Council’s values, vision and directions
  • At least five years of experience in grassroots organizing or campaigning, or a relevant degree and/or lived experiences
  • Demonstrated experience working at a lead level or leading some aspects of a complex campaign, including a range of campaign strategies and tactics like on-the-ground mobilizations and escalation, grassroots communications, policy negotiations, and digital campaigning
  • Experience in policy research and analysis, including direct engagement with legislative offices and political decision-makers
  • Demonstrated experience working with broad coalitions on a shared goal and accountability
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, conflict resolution and negotiation
  • Strong knowledge of current national economic, social and political issues
  • Demonstrated project management experience with an ability to prioritize and effectively handle competing demands
  • Capacity to work in a self-directed manner as part of a distributed team
  • Basic computer skills, including virtual meeting tools and participatory virtual meeting facilitation

Preferred candidates will also demonstrate a combination of the following qualifications:

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Experience with media engagement and public speaking
  • Training or experience with in-person and online workshop development and facilitation
  • Experience working in more than one geographic region across Canada
  • Fluency in both official languages of Canada

Location

This position is based in Ottawa, however applicants who wish to work remotely from elsewhere in Canada will be considered. Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, this position will be required to work from home.

This is a full-time permanent position of 35 hours per week. Pay scale starting at $66,421.00 (Classification 5) per year.
