The Council of Canadians is available for comment on the Trudeau government’s announcement that it will buy the controversial Kinder Morgan pipeline for $4.5 billion.
“Trudeau is taking a big gamble and he’s going to lose. The public doesn’t back a Big Oil buyout, on the ground resistance will persist, and the Indigenous legal challenges to federal and National Energy Board approval are not concluded,” says Andrea Harden-Donahue, Energy and Climate Justice Campaigner with the Council of Canadians. “It is far past time for bold leadership that respects Indigenous rights, not just talks about it, stops fossil fuel expansion and prioritizes water protection. We have so much to gain in setting down this good path and so much to lose in clinging to Big Oil myths of economic glory.”
