Council of Canadians responds to Ontario government Energy East pipeline announcement

In response to the Government of Ontario’s announcement today that it will launch public consultations on the proposed Energy East pipeline, the Council of Canadians is announcing that it will work with its volunteer chapters and allies in Ontario to encourage participation in the consultations.

“We welcome the opportunity for Ontarians to have their voices heard on the Energy East pipeline,” says Andrea Harden-Donahue, Energy and Climate Justice Campaigner with the Council of Canadians. “In addition to the serious effects this massive pipeline will have on tar sands expansion and climate change, there are very specific concerns in Ontario about the safety of the existing pipeline and the potential to drive up natural gas costs.”

Dozens of communities and First Nations in Ontario are on or near the existing TransCanada Mainline, or the proposed expansion, and may be affected by the project.

The Council of Canadians opposes the Energy East pipeline. This export pipeline would pose serious threats to local water supplies, communities and coastal waters. It would promote expansion of the tar sands that have made massive profits for corporations, but leave contaminated water, land and air for nearby communities and stand in the way of the alternative energy future we need.
