Harper insults World Water Day by investing a mere 0.7% of needed amount for Great Lakes clean-up

The Council of Canadians is dismissing a federal Great Lakes funding announcement as absurdly inadequate.

Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent is touting a $3,322,321 contribution toward cleaning up the Great Lakes. However, the Council of Canadians says $500 million is needed to implement a comprehensive action plan to protect the Great Lakes, meaning the government is allocating less than 0.7% of the amount needed to protect the Great Lakes.

This federal announcement of negligible funding for the Great Lakes is all the more farcical, given the government’s plans to remove habitat protection from the Fisheries Act, says the Council, which is available for comment on this announcement.
