On July 9, the Village Council of Cumberland - a town in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island - voted to become a Blue Community. That means the community recognizes the human right to water, it will stop the sale of bottled water in municipal facilities, and it commits to keep drinking water and wastewater services publicly owned and operated. Yesterday, the Comox Valley Record reports, "Linda Safford of the local chapter of the Council of Canadians presented a certificate to council recognizing the village as a Blue Community. The organization, along with the Vancouver Island Water Watch Coalition, has called on local governments to protect and conserve water by banning the sale of bottled water at events and in public facilities, among other measures."
