Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,
I oppose the deal you have struck to use $4.5 billion of taxpayer dollars to buy Texas-based Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline project. This cost only covers the existing pipeline. The cost to build the planned expansion isn’t accounted for, which is expected to push the price tag to more than $15 billion.
This is public money that could be far better spent to end the drinking water crisis in First Nations, implement a national pharmacare plan, provide affordable housing, cut tuition costs or expand public transit.
Instead, you are pushing to buy a pipeline that, if built, would break your promise to phase out fossil fuel subsidies, violate Indigenous rights, betray Canada’s commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement, threaten 1,355 waterways with a catastrophic diluted bitumen spill, and put good jobs in fisheries and tourism at risk.
Beyond that, buying the pipeline is a bad economic choice and the benefits of the project have been grossly overstated. Far more jobs can be generated by investments in green jobs and climate solutions.
I call on you to reverse your decision to buy out the Kinder Morgan pipeline using public money. Kinder Morgan knew when to walk away. Now it’s your turn.
