Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow spoke at a public forum in Karlsruhe, Germany today on the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), the United States-European Union Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) provision.
A media release states (in German), “The alternative Nobel Prize winner Maude Barlow will be in Karlsruhe for a public discussion ahead of the Paris summit on climate change.” It highlights a panel discussion with her, Bishop Prof. Dr. Jochen Cornelius-Bundschuh, MEP Sven Giegold, and Gabor Paál, chief science editor at the SWR radio. The forum took place in the atrium of the Evangelical Supreme Ecclesiastical Council in Karlsruhe.

Today’s events were organized by the Evangelische Akademie Baden (Protestant Academy Baden).
Barlow has been in Europe since November 1.
Her time there began with a Global Justice Now organized tour against CETA, TTIP and ISDS that went to Dundee, Scotland (Nov. 1), Leeds (Nov. 3), London (Nov. 5), Oxford (Nov. 6), Cardiff (Nov. 7) and Dublin (Nov. 8). She then spoke on the same issues in Madrid (Nov. 10-11), Barcelona (Nov. 12) and Vienna (Nov. 16-17).
On Nov. 19-21, Barlow was in Bregenz, Austria at a ‘Project of Hope’ event with Right Livelihood award laureates Sima Simar and Jumanda Gakelbone, who work to defend the right to water and land for the Kalahari people in Botswana. The website for those events noted, “Often covering completely different topics, the Laureates visit schools in the area, take part in public panel discussions and in a full day conference.”
On Nov. 23, she spoke in Geneva at a panel discussion on ‘Global Advocacy and Local Action – Working towards an enabling environment for the promotion and protection of economic, social and cultural rights’. That forum included Jumanda Gakelbone and Camille Selleger from the International Baby Food Action Network.
Yesterday, Barlow spoke at a gathering of about 85 people in Geneva. There she talked about the importance of public water (versus water privatization) and trade justice.
Tomorrow, Barlow will arrive in Bern. During her visit there, she will be presenting a blue community certificate to aki – Katholische Hochschulseelsorge, an institution in the domain of spiritual welfare for university students and professors. She will also be giving a keynote address about our blue communities project.
Barlow will then travel to Paris on Nov. 29 for the COP 21 climate talks there.
