Council organizer AJ Klein challenges TD at #NoDAPL & #StopKM protest

Council of Canadians organizer AJ Klein spoke at the "Standing Rock Solidarity Rally - TD Out of KM and DAPL!" organized by our allies the Treaty Alliance and Climate Convergence Metro Vancouver.

Other featured speakers at the rally included Kukpi7 Judy Wilson - Union of BC Indian Chiefs, Grand Chief Stewart Philip - UBCIC, Juanita Desjarlais - Cree and Dene Activist, and Sven Biggs - Stand.Earth.

The outreach for the protest highlighted:  "TD is one of the main lenders to the Dakota Access pipeline project (and the biggest in Canada), lending $365 million to make the DAPL project possible. TD is also acting as the principle broker for Kinder Morgan, helping it raise the money it needs to try to ram through the Trans Mountain Expansion tar sands pipeline and tanker project over the very clear objections of First Nations in BC and Tribes in the Pacific Northwest."

It also notes, "The Treaty Alliance is calling on Canadians, municipalities and businesses to stop doing business with TD until such time as TD stops violating Indigenous rights and stops threatening all of our children by funding climate change. We are starting with TD but any investor in the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Expansion can expect to have its involvement publicly opposed as well."

Today's protest took place on the traditional, unceded, and occupied territories of the səlil̓wətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.

The Council of Canadians opposes both the 890,000 barrel per day Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline (that runs from northern Alberta to British Columbia) and the 570,000 barrel per day Energy Transfer Partners' Dakota Access fracked oil pipeline (that runs from North Dakota to Illinois).
