Election countdown: Students ready to vote in record numbers

Brigette DePapeOTTAWA – The successful campaign to get out the student vote, Storm the Dorm, continues on campuses across the country. On Monday October 19th, students from across the country will be on campuses encouraging students to vote.

“I’m so encouraged,” says Brigette DePape, the Council of Canadians Youth Vote Campaigner and Storm the Dorm coordinator. DePape first gained prominence in 2011 as the rogue page holding a Stop Harper sign in the Senate. “We’ve had the highest ever advance voter turnout, many of them students and young people.”

Some of the universities where events will be taking place include:

  • Western University (London)
  • St Clair College (Windsor)
  • University of Regina
  • Simon Fraser University, Vancouver campus
  • Simon Fraser University, Burnaby campus
  • University of Toronto

“When 80% of young people want to see change, you have a very motivated demographic,” adds DePape. “Harper has done his best to create obstacles to voting, but nothing can stop us. We are the game-changers nobody saw coming.”

Media are invited to the University of Toronto event.
