The Council of Canadians was helping to get out the youth vote earlier this week at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.
As noted in our promotion for the gathering, “Come and meet other like-minded young people, learn about challenges and opportunities of mobilizing youth for the 2015 federal election, and plan creative ways to get out the vote.” After the event on Monday afternoon, our Go Vote campaigner Brigette DePape wrote, “Thanks so much for coming tonight! Feeling so inspired by you all! Thanks to the amazing organizers, awesome speakers, and all those who helped make this event happen! Hope to see you tomorrow from 4 pm to 530 pm at SFU Burnaby campus Room 2290 for a training and canvass.”
She also noted that students from Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia and the British Columbia Institute of Technology were in attendance, as well as some young workers and people from political parties and allied organizations including the Canadian Labour Congress and the Canadian Federation of Students. DePape adds, “The Monday afternoon event started off with speakers Jerrilyn Webster who shared a powerful traditional Indigenous song, acknowledged the territories and wowed everyone, Tessica and Abigail who shared their experience of organizing in the provincial election where the youth vote increased by nearly 1,000 votes, and Tahia who talked about her work with Check Your Head.
The event at Simon Fraser University was the third stop in the Game-Changers Tour, a series of events and trainings across the country. The first two visits in that tour were at the University of Winnipeg on February 25-26 and the University of Regina on March 5-6. Brigette will also be going to Ryerson University in Toronto on March 23 and Nipissing University in North Bay on March 30. Our Halifax based Atlantic organizer will be holding a Game-Changers Tour event in Mahone Bay on April 26.
