Cross-Province Town Hall Meetings:
Actions Launched to Protect Local Access to Health Care
The Ontario budget for health care is harsher than even the most radical advocates for cutbacks predicted. After years of tax cuts for corporations and the wealthiest, the Ontario government is trying to resolve its deficit on the backs of the sick and the elderly.
There are alternatives. All residents who are concerned about protecting local access to care are asked to come out and join the discussion, share your experiences and ideas and help to forge the fight-back campaign to save our local health services.
By spreading the word and organizing people in communities all across Ontario to stand up for their local health care services, we have succeeded time and time again in protecting local services, stopping cuts and privatization, and improving care. It matters that you tell your neighbours and friends. Because together we can make a real difference. –

The "Shocking" Cost of Energy
Financial ... Social ... Environmental
Shocking increases in the cost of electricity over the past several years have
meant a nearly 50% hike in residential electricity prices.
The province of Ontario tells us that our growing electricity bills are caused by the
move to pricier but cleaner energy such as solar and wind. Is this move to
renewables the real reason for the high cost of electricity or is there another
answer to our electricity woes?
While the rest of the world turns its back on high cost, high risk nuclear, Ontario
energy planners are calling for billions to be spent on new and refurbished
nuclear units. But we don’t have to spend billions on a dangerous nuclear buildup.
Instead, we could invest in job creators like green energy efficiency, clean
energy sources like hydro imports from Quebec, and flexible and super efficient
options like combined heat and power (CHP). All of these options are vastly less
expensive - and less dangerous - than nuclear power.
Our panelists will present their perspectives and we want to hear from you. What
are your concerns and ideas?

CALLS FROM WHALES: Forum on the Impacts of Enbridge BC Oil Pipeline
Kootenays for a Pipeline-Free BC presents:
Kootenays for a Pipeline-Free BC transports the people on a moving journey, through CALLS FROM WHALES, a Forum on the Impacts of the Enbridge BC Oil Pipeline.
The forum features Andrew Nikiforuk, investigative reporter and author of award winning book, TAR SANDS, Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent, Art Sterritt, Executive Chair of the Coastal First Nations, and Billy Jo Bray, President of Visions for our Future. It includes high tech power point visuals, locally produced multi media presentations, inspirational panels and surprise guests.
According to Nathan Cullen, MP, the Federal Government has removed decision-making authority from the National Energy Board’s Joint Review Panel, giving the Conservative Government decision making rights to making final “go/no go” decisions on the building of the proposed BC Northern Gateway Pipeline.
Calls from Whales provides quality education and is framed in such a way that the audience can connect with possible visions of what it could be like if Enbridge gets the go ahead. It is an entry point which gives concerned people an opportunity to become engaged and learn more about what’s at stake so these visions can be transformed into positive ways of living with all life.

Warrior Nation: Rebranding Canada in an Age of Anxiety
Book launch and author talk
Join authors Ian McKay and Jamie Swift as they dissect Canada's military re-branding into a "Warrior Nation." Once known for peacekeeping, Canada is becoming a militarized nation whose apostles—the “new warriors”—are fighting to shift public opinion. Unpacking the ominous campaign to change a nation’s definition of itself, Warrior Nation is an essential read for those concerned by the relentless effort to conscript Canadian history.
