Oppose military recruitment in schools

5 December, 2007

The Honourable Peter MacKay
Minister of Defence
Parliament Buildings
Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A6

Dear Honourable Peter MacKay,

Re: Oppose military recruitment in schools

The Council of Canadians is Canada’s largest citizens’ organization with members and chapters across the country. As a government and corporate watchdog, the Council offers a critical voice on key national issues including our water and energy resources, public services such as health care, and the promotion of independent trade, foreign and military policies that reflect the values of Canadian citizens.

At our recent Annual General Meeting in Kelowna, BC, October 28, our membership passed a resolution calling for the federal, provincial and territorial governments to stop the Canadian Armed Forces from recruitment and outreach activities in Canada's elementary and high schools, universities and colleges. We do not believe that public education should be merged with military objectives. Our children should be learning about peace-building, the avoidance of violent conflict, global justice and true security, and not be subject to misleading images of the military through publicity videos and brochures.

On behalf of our Board of Directors and members across Canada, I appreciate your response to this demand to stop military recruitment and outreach activities in Canada's elementary and high schools, universities and colleges.

Yours Sincerely,

John Urquhart
Executive Director
